Best Hiking Sticks for Seniors | Hiker Hunger Outfitters

As you enter your golden years, you’re presented with the wonderful opportunity to explore the outdoors without work commitments or school carpools. Hiking, in particular, allows seniors to enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty of the outdoors while also exercising. To make the most of the experience, it is important to have the right gear to ensure a safe and comfortable hike. But where do you begin?

Hiking sticks, also known as trekking poles, help to improve balance and stability, reduce the impact on joints, and provide support when going uphill or downhill. Using hiking sticks can also help to alleviate fatigue and allow seniors to hike for longer periods of time, giving you more time to soak up the sun and keep your joints loose.

At Hiker Hunger Outfitters, it’s our mission to help people of all ages get outside and stay active. That’s why we offer the best hiking sticks for seniors and advice on choosing the best option for you.

What to consider when choosing hiking poles for seniors

Not all hiking poles were created equal. There are several factors to consider to ensure the best fit and functionality for the individual user when choosing hiking poles.

Some key points to consider include the following:

  • Weight of the poles: It is important to choose lightweight poles to reduce fatigue while hiking.
  • Adjustability:Look for poles that can be adjusted to the appropriate height for you.
  • Grip:Choose poles with a comfortable and secure grip, especially if the hike involves wet or slippery conditions.
  • Material:Aluminum or carbon fiber poles are generally lightweight and strong but may be more expensive.
  • Shock absorption:Some hiking poles come with shock-absorbing technology to reduce the impact on the joints, which can be especially beneficial for seniors.
  • Locking mechanism:Make sure the poles have a reliable locking mechanism to keep them securely in place at the desired length. A flip-lock mechanism is generally the easiest to adjust and the most secure.

Extra features:Consider additional features such as removable baskets for use in snow or mud or rubber tips for added traction on different terrains.

Best hiking poles for seniors

If you are a senior looking to purchase a new set of hiking poles, it can be overwhelming to sift through the many options available. That’s where we come in to help you make an informed decision. To kick you off, here are a couple of the best hiking poles for seniors.

Aluminum 7075 Trekking Poles

The7075 Aircraft Grade Aluminum Trekking pole is strong and lightweight, providing necessary support without adding unnecessary clutter. Designed to last and built for comfort, the Aluminum 7075 trekking poles are ideal for all terrains — whether you’re walking through lush summer forests in Boston or meandering through the trails in Alaska.

Reaching 54 inches when fully extended, the hiking poles collapse to a convenient 24 inches. Easy to adjust, you can set the hiking poles to the desired height using a simple telescoping flip-lock design.

Aluminum trekking poles offer on-trail durability, stability, and comfort, perfect for rough terrain and heavy-duty conditions. If you’re a casual hiker, these affordable trekking poles are ready to join you on the trails. As an added bonus, they are delivered with rubber tips, snow baskets, mud baskets and feet, and a carrying case!

100% Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles

Carbon fiber hiking poles strike the perfect balance between ultra-light support and strong assistance, providing stability in all conditions for experienced hikers.

Whether you’re planning a backpacking trip to celebrate retirement, preparing for an annual mountain summit, or a regular weekend hiker, carbon fiber trekking poles are a must-have accessory.

Collapsible to 24 inches and extendable to 54 inches, these carbon fiber trekking poles are the perfect accessory when you plan to hike light across gravel and ice, sand and mud, snow and sand, pavement, and rocks — or even indoor routes!

Compared to aluminum, carbon fiber hiking poles are stronger and ultra-lightweight, with the bonus of shock absorbency. The natural cork grip helps to keep your hands dry and blister free on the trails, with super padded straps to prevent chafing and an extended moisture-wicking handle for ultimate sweat absorption — because we know how hot it can get out there!

Safety and Smiles while Hiking

Hiking poles are a great addition to any senior's hiking gear, offering support, stability, and reduced impact on the joints. With the right hiking poles, you can enjoy the trails with confidence and comfort for many years to come.

Investing in quality hiking poles is one of the best tips to consider when hiking as a senior, but it’s not the only one. Whether a novice on the trails or a seasoned hiker, consider the following tips to make the most of your time outdoors.

  • Start with shorter hikes and gradually build to longer ones.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, including layers to adjust to changing weather conditions and sturdy shoes with good traction.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings and follow proper safety protocols, such as letting someone know your hiking route and estimated return time.
  • Consider purchasing a personal locator beacon or satellite phone for added safety in case of emergencies.
  • Take breaks as needed and listen to your body.
  • Consider joining a hiking group or going with a partner for added support and companionship.
  • Follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment and preserve the beauty of the trails for others.
  • Have fun and enjoy the sense of accomplishment and connection with nature that comes with hiking!

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to pack your trusty hiking poles!

I wouldn’t leave the house without my trekking poles! My HHO carbon fiber poles get abused and they just keep on keepin’ on! There are some things you can cut corners on with your gear, but like we always said in the airborne infantry, “if you lose everything, weapon ammo, bayonet, food, water, navigation equipment, etc, you can still move and function if you’ve taken care of your feet, boots, and associated mobility gear. Trekking poles are always thought of as part of my ability to move even if I lost everything else!

HHO poles meet the need! Short-cut your gear somewhere else that isn’t as critical
